The Majestic Kjemåfossen
The journey to Kjemåfossen begins at the Nordland National Park Center or the Saltdal Tourist Center. To start, cross the E6 using the pedestrian underpass located south of the entrance. The hiking trail follows the eastern bank of Lønselva and leads to a suspension bridge over the river, continuing along a picturesque path where you can stroll beneath a lush canopy of foliage and listen to the melodious birdsong. Upon reaching the wooden bridge that spans Kjemåfossen, we recommend taking a short detour along the waterfall to fully absorb its powerful presence. There are also facilities available for a round trip up and around the waterfall! If you prefer, you can simply return to Storjord.
From the wooden bridge over the lower section of Kjemåfossen, you can make your way back to Storjord. Along the route, you'll pass Futhellaren (clearly marked), a stone slab made up of large rocks where eagles can often be spotted...
History
Kjemåfossen was proposed for damming as a power supply in the 1970s, leading to a referendum in 1982 that resulted in a narrow majority against development. By 1987, all plans for power development in Saltfjellet were abandoned. Consequently, the public has access to a unique area in the form of Norway's second-largest national park, Saltfjellet-Svartisen.
The waterfall's distinctive character lies in the profound sensation you experience during your visit, shaped by its sounds, sights, and, most importantly, the emotions you feel while standing beside it. You choose how intimately you wish to engage with this natural wonder.
